This teaching unit will introduce students to the fundamental aspects of biology that underpin cell structure and function, which are prerequisites for environmental and archaeological sciences.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;


Describing the basic concepts of cell biology


Illustrating the processes involved in cell division


Describing the major metabolism mechanisms


Performing and reporting on cell biology laboratory experiments

Module Assessment Strategies

The module will be assessed using a combination of end of semester final exam (35%), continuous class assessment and reporting of laboratory-based work (65%). The continuous class assessment will involve three-four theory assessments incorporating a series of short questions. Practical work will be assessed via written scientific reports.

Indicative Syllabus

  1. The cell and biomolecules (prokaryote-eukaryote, proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and biological membranes)
  2. Cell communication (cytoskeleton, diffusion-osmosis, ion channels and transporters, vesicular transport)
  3. Cell division processes (DNA replication, transcription, translation, mitosis, meiosis)
  4. Cell metabolism (enzymes, fermentation, respiration, photosynthesis)
  5. Laboratory practicals (a selection of basic cell functions and biomolecular tests will be demonstrated)
