Description

The module aims to introduce learners to the structure & function of the major biological macromolecules of the cell.  The module also introduces learners to the structure of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells and the functions of eukaryotic cell organelles. 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

Describe the structures and functions of the eukaryotic cells & cell organelles.

Illustrate the difference between a prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell.

Describe the cell cycle & cell division.

Describe the structure and function of biological macromolecules

Perform and report on, biological laboratory experiments.

Indicative Syllabus

Cell structure and function

The structure of a typical eukaryotic cell. The structures and functions of the organelles of a eukaryotic cell. Transport across membranes.  The structure of a typical prokaryotic cell, bacterial growth

Macromolecules of the cell

The structure and function of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids.

Cell Division

Binary Fission, Mitosis & Meiosis.

Laboratory Practicals and Student Centred Learning

The module will include laboratory practicals and student centered learning that will supplement the lecture based learning.
