Description

This module examines the emerging new technologies in the biopharmaceutical industry. It evaluates the current trends towards improved productivity, and also evaluates the increasing diversification in the product pipeline. The practical component of the module covers much of the skills associated with the use of single-use technologies in biopharmaceutical processing.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Outline and evaluate the key trends towards improved productivity in the biopharmaceutical industry.

2.

Describe the challenges of creating a modular, fully single-use facility.

3.

Describe the theory and challenges associated with continuous bioprocessing for both upstream and downstream bioprocessing operations.

4.

Describe the increasing diversification in the product pipeline, outlining advances in cell therapies, gene therapies, combination products and precision medicines.

5.

Demonstrate a range of practical skills associated with single-use technologies used for both upstream and downstream processing operations.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

As this is a practical-based module attendance at the NIBRT or IT Sligo training laboratories is a requirement. A certain amount of the assessment work will take place at these locations. The remaining assessment approach for this module will be 100% Continuous Assessment with a range of assessment methods employed including some of the following: short-form assessment exams incl. MCQ’s/SAQ’s, project assignments/reports, practical/project work, essays, oral presentations, vivas etc.

Module Assessment Strategies

As this is a practical-based module, attendance at the NIBRT practical session is mandatory. Some of the assessment for the module will take place during the practical session.

The remaining assessment approach for this module is 100% continuous assessment, with a range of assessment methods employed including short-form assessment exams and practical report write-ups.
