BIO09068 2016 Bioanalytics Practical Module
This practical module aims to provide specialised knowledge in the theory, practice and interpretation of the various assays and instrumentation routinely employed in a Biopharmaceutical Quality Control laboratory. The necessary skills and competencies will be acquired through a combination of self-study and the completion of a sequence of laboratory-based practicals and demonstrations.
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Outline and evaluate the main quality control and the various assays/tests methods routinely employed in the analysis of biopharmaceuticals.
Perform a range of analysis and outline and evaluate the equipment requirements for performance of the various test methods.
Interpret and critically evaluate the data and results obtained from the various practicals and demonstrations.
Take responsibility for and direct the work of other individuals in a GMP- like environment.
Evaluate and apply scientific and technical information to solve/troubleshoot analytical problems and demonstrate research capabilities.
Demonstrate effective communication skills both orally and in writing.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
Experimental work is carried out independently and with some originality.
Lectures will be blended (both on line [live and recorded] and lecture theatre-based.
Module Assessment Strategies
The assessment approach for this module will be 100% Continuous Assessment with a range of assessment methods employed including some of the following: short-form assessment exams incl. MCQ's/SAQ's, project assignments/reports, practical/project work (50%), essays, vivas etc.

The range of lab-based practicals covered may include some or all of the following assays/instrumentation; Spectrophotometry and Protein assays; Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide slab gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), Capillary Electrophoresis (CE), Immunoassays, Polymerase Chain Reaction and/or advanced nucleic acid techniques, Liquid Chromatography and Mass Spectrophotometry. Additional laboratory based practicals/demonstrations will be offered as new and emerging technologies/test methods emerge.
