Description

This module covers much of the practical skills associated with cell culture and upstream processing in biopharmaceutical operations. The relevant learning is acquired through the completion of laboratory-based and pilot-plant based practical sessions that are designed to impart the required knowledge and skills required for upstream processing operations.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate a range of practical skills associated with upstream processing in the biopharmaceutical industry.

2.

Interpret and evaluate the data and results obtained from various upstream processing practicals.

3.

Demonstrate the skills required for upstream bioprocessing operations.

4.

Demonstrate effective communication skills.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The range of practical sessions in NIBRT will cover some or all of the following:

  • Aseptic technique
  • Cell culture techniques including cell counting (manual and automated), cell sampling and metabolite analysis
  • Bioreactor set-up for SIP
  • Disposable Bioreactor set-up
  • Centrifuge set-up and operation

Module Assessment Strategies

As this is a practical based module, attendance at the NIBRT practical sessions is a requirement. Some of the module assessment will take place during the practical sessions.

The assessment approach for this module is 100% continuous assessment, with a range of assessment methods employed including short-form assessment exams and practical report write-ups.

Repeat Assessments

as per Q manual
