BIO06011 2011 Upstream Bioprocessing Level 6.
This module aims to provide the student with a fundamental understanding of both the theory and practical aspects of cell culture processing as it pertains to the manufacture of modern biopharmaceutical products.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Describe the basics of cell biology and the process kinetics relating to cell growth and protein expression.
Explain the different types and formulations of media available.
Explain cell counting techniques utilising appropriate technology to verify cell density performance during bioreactor operation.
Describe the various bioreactor designs available and their key features.
Outline the main operating and control loops for a modern bioreactor and its critical control paramenters.
Perform a range of practical laboratory experiments relating to cell culture processing.
Module Assessment Strategies
A combination of continuous assessment strategies, some laboratory experiments and an end-of-term exam.
