Design studio forms the core element of Architecture at IT Sligo, with each of the design studio projects exploring the four philosophical vision points that characterise the programme. Design studio projects address design issues of relevance to the region and are integrated into the local area from a social, environmental, historical, and cultural perspective. Project types include existing buildings, extensions and new build and range from projects sited in extreme locations to those in villages, towns, Irish and European cities. They aim to give the student exposure to a range of project types including community engagement, multidisciplinary projects, live projects and public exhibition and to engage imagination, creativity, analysis and critical judgement in resolving design issues.

Architectural Design Studio 4 begins with a examiation of the regeneration and re-imagining of civic buildings, located in strategic areas that are not being utilised to their full potential. The intention is to explore ways in which architecture can transform places most in need of rejuvenation. interface between people and the public landscape, as well as contributing to regional research in the public realm.  

The module concludes with a multi-disciplinary project involving Level 8/9 students from architecture, civil engineering, quantity surveying and project management programmes from within the School of Engineering and Design. The multi-disciplinary project offers the students the opportunity to work in a simulated professional context through key aspects of detail design, structural proposal, specification, legislative compliance, costing and programming of the detailed design proposals.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;


Apply comprehensive design strategies and methodologies in the creation of complex design proposals


Apply relevant legislation, policy, codes of practice, health, safety and planning guidelines in the conception and creation of design proposals addressing the regeneration and reimagining of civic buildings


Demonstrate a complex conceptual and critical approach to architectural design that integrates and satisfies considerations of identity, society, politics, context, aesthetics and technology


Apply detailed principles of building construction, structure, materials and environment strategies in the creation of design proposals


Demonstrate the influence of the fine arts in the conceptualisation and representation of complex design proposals


Apply specific detailed contextual design strategies in the creation of design proposals related to key issues and historical precedents of civic design, urban redevelopment and intervention


Apply a range of professional multimodal communication methods and media to present design proposals effectively to diverse stakeholders


Demonstrate problem solving skills, professional judgement and the ability to make appropriate decisions in complex and unpredictable circumstances

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Students will be required to develop their architectural brief and related theoretical framework in consultation with an allocated supervisor.  During the course of the design project the course team will deliver: a variety of lecture and supporting inputs that facilitate the students’ ongoing design activities; individual tutorials with supervisors; and facilitate formative and summative reviews.

Module Assessment Strategies

Each stage of the students’ development of their architectural brief and theoretical framework will be discussed and formatively assessed by their supervisor
