In many parts of the world, archaeology is considered a sub discipline of anthropology. This module will provide students with an introduction to cultural anthropology and anthropological approaches to archaeology, including middle range theory, neo-evolutionary theory, ethnoarchaeology and ethnohistory.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;


Explain the relationship between Anthropology and Archaeology


Communicate the main tenets of Cultural Anthropology


Evaluate the application and efficacy of Middle Range Theory


Appraise the impact of Enthoarchaeology and Ethnohistory on archaeology


Initiate the application of anthropological theory to archaeological problems


Communicate and evaluate the differences between inductive and deductive reasoning

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The module will be run as a seminar with weekly readings, presentations and discussions.

Module Assessment Strategies

The assessments are based on developing the skills of critical thinking, critical reading and critical writing. The student will be expected to take part in discussions based upon assigned readings and each student will do one presentation on an assigned reading and one ethnoarchaeological case study. The final essay will focus on a critical assessment of anthropological approaches in archaeology.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover both core anthropological concepts and a more detailed examination of ethnorarchaeological approaches. Topics to be discussed will include: Culture and Ethnocentrism, Social Organisation and Economy, Kinship and Gender, Belief, Religion and Ideology, Neo-evolution and Middle Range Theory, Ethnoarchaeology, Ethnoarchaeological Case Studies, Ethnohistory and Linguistics.
