ARCH08024 2019 Advanced Topics in Archaeological Theory
This module builds on the skills and knowledge developed in Archaeological Theory. Each year this module will focus on the critical analysis of a number of recent and relevant archaeological texts. Students will apply their growing critical skills to the evaluation of the ideas and theories presented in these texts, leading to a greater understanding of the role of theory in archaeological interpretation. Reading lists will vary year to year.
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Identify those portions of an archaeological text that are based on fact and which are based upon theoretical interpretation.
Appraise and critique archaeological texts from a theoretical perspective.
Evaluate the strength of a theoretical argument.
Effectively communicate theoretical concepts through both written and oral mediums.
Concisely summarise written texts.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
Teaching and learning will involve weekly readings, student presentations and discussions. The final essay will be based upon the critique of an archaeological text of the student's choice.
Module Assessment Strategies
Assessments are based on evaluating the necessary skills of critical reading and writing in addition to the expression of theoretical ideas in both verbal and written formats. Students will be expected to give at least 2 presentations and lead the subsequent discussions. In the final essay students will be given wide scope to explore any theoretical area that interests them most.
The syllabus will vary from year to year based upon the chosen reading list. Topics covered will include those from a range of theoretical perspectives including but not limited to, Processual/Post Processual Theory, Contextual Archaeology, Gender Archaeology, Cognitive Archaeology, Phenomenology, Landscape Archaeology and papers from related disciplines of History, Anthropology, Classics, Cognitive Science, Philosophy and Psychology.
