Description

This module examines the nature of the European and Irish Iron Age. Topics covered include: metallurgy and ironworking; Hallstatt and La Tène societies in Europe and their influence on Ireland;  travel, transport, chariots and horses; the bog body phenomenon; burial; settlement and hillforts; Irish royal sites; the Romans in Ireland; problems specific to Ireland’s ‘dark age’.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.
Explain the arguments regarding the Bronze/Iron Age transition and the apparent invisibility of the Irish Iron Age.
2.
Express and criticize the various arguments regarding Ireland's becoming celtic.
3.

Place the Irish Iron Age within a wider European context.

4.
Express archaeological data and ideas concerning the Iron Age through both oral and written formats.
5.

Demonstrate detailed knowledge of Iron Age settlement, material culture, economy and ritual.

6.

Demonstrate skill in researching the Iron Age archaeology of Europe.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered full-time. The module will include lectures, a fieldtrip and will be augmented by independent learning and research. This approach is expected to address student learning needs.

 

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 60% Continuous Assessment and 40% Final Exam.

The continuous assessment will involve two assignments where students are required to research and write a 2,500-word essay and deliver a 10 minute presentation. Both works will demonstrate the student's ability to critically evaluate aspects of Iron Age Europe.
