Description

This course provides an overview of hunter gatherer populations in Ireland and  Europe during the Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Periods. Topics covered will include: Hunter Gatherer Theory; Environmental conditions during the last ice age; the arrival of Homo sapiens in Europe; Palaeolithic settlement, material culture, art and ritual; the question of a Palaeolithic presence in Ireland; problems with the Mesolithic record; economy and diet; settlement and mobility; significance of natural places; lithics and lithic technology; microwear analysis; burial and funerary practise; ritual and votive deposition; and social complexity.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Explain the arguments regarding the earliest colonisation of Ireland.

2.

Demonstrate detailed knowledge of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic settlement, material culture, economy and ritual activities.

3.

Exhibit knowledge of both Palaeolithic and Mesolithic lithic technology and methods of assessment.

4.

Express archaeological data and ideas concerning the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic through both oral and written formats.

5.

Demonstrate skill in researching the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic archaeology of Europe.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching will include primarily lectures with a practical focusing on Palaeolithic/Mesolithic technologies. 

Module Assessment Strategies

 There will be a written report on the field trip, a practical project involving lab work and a presentation in addition to a final exam.

Indicative Syllabus
