Description

The module introduces learners to the principles of toxicology and to toxicology testing and analysis.  

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Discuss the principles of toxicology and communicate information accurately and effectively using written, visual and numeral forms.

2.

Outline the major drugs and toxins of forensic interest.

3.

Describe the use of drugs in sport.

4.

Explain the processes involved in the absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of xenobiotics

5.

Perform and report on, toxicological & analytical laboratory experiments.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The Analytical Toxicology module will be delivered full time and will include lectures and laboratory practicals.  Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment where appropriate.

Module Assessment Strategies

The Analytical Toxicology module is 40% Practical and 60% Theory.  

Laboratory skills and report-writing ability are assessed as part of the practical work performed during the module (40%).  There will assignments (10%) and there will be a Final Exam (50%)

The student must achieve 40% overall to pass the module.

Principles of Toxicology

Dose response curve, LD50, NEL, toxin, toxicant, poison classification

ADME

Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism & Excretion of xenobiotics

Drugs & Toxins of Forensic interest

Alcohol, opiates, cannabinoids, amphetamine, new psychoactive substances,  psychiatric drugs, metals, solvents,   

Drugs  in Sport

EPO, steroids. 

Postmortem toxicology

Postmortem sampling and testing

Laboratory Practicals and Student Centred Learning

The module will include laboratory practicals and student centered learning that will supplement the lecture based learning.
