Description

This subject aims to provide the learner with introductory concepts and knowledge of the relevant anatomical and physiological systems in livestock, poultry and aquaculture species and examines how these systems relate to food animal production and animal welfare. 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

List and explain key concepts in farm animal anatomy and physiology

2.

Identify and describe the structure and function of the major body systems of farm animals

3.

 Explain the composition and nutritive value of common animal feedstuffs and nutritional requirements of monogastric and ruminant farm animals  

4.

Outline key concepts in farm animal genetics and breeding 

5.

Assess, evaluate, organise and communicate information from different sources in an accurate and effective manner

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered full-time. This will include lectures, laboratory practicals and site visits augmented by independent learning needs. Virtual learning environment will be used as repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment.

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 100% continuous assessment. 

Module will be assessed using a combination of continuous assessment and practicals. 

Continuous assessment and course work will comprise regular summative tests to encourage engagement with the module, monitor progress, provide feedback and examine the learning process. 

Practical work will be assessed via written assignments/reports and summative assessment.

The student must achieve 40% overall to pass the subject.
